Most of the English grammar books in Chinese nowadays describe the basic five English sentence patterns with the symbols of S (Subject), V (Verb), O (Object), and C (Complement). In actual practice, Chinese students with their linguistic cultural difference often encounter certain cognitive difficulties. The English symbols of the basic sentence patterns are based on the functional interrelation of parts within a sentence and thus more difficult than the symbols of the word classification. The English symbols indicate their meanings in an objective way, but the Chinese symbols refer to their meaning through the heart-centered experiences. Basically, an English sentence is centered on its main verb, and yet a Chinese sentence often keeps a topic and a subject at the same time; therefore, the flow of consciousness of a sentence is different in an English sentence from a Chinese one. This thesis, based on the Chinese thought-pattern of Heart-Situation and Interrelation, has attempted to analyze the present difficulties and then offer certain new solving policies, such as using the six sentence patterns instead of the basic five and adopting the Chinese approaches to the interpretation of these patterns. In conquering problems caused by the cultural cognitive difference, it will, hopefully, provide Chinese learners of English with certain assistance.
