Introduction: With the aging population and the increasing number of deaths in a super-aged society, the job characteristics of funeral service personnel involves comforting the living and handling physical labor, as well as managing their own emotions. Good physical and mental health qualities are beneficial for emotional regulation and preventing occupational injuries. However, there is limited research on the relationship between the service work, emotional labor, and musculoskeletal discomfort of funeral service personnel. Therefore, further research is needed to explore the association between the emotional labor and musculoskeletal discomfort arising from the job content of funeral service personnel. Objective: This study aims to investigate the correlation between the job characteristics, emotional labor, and musculoskeletal discomfort of funeral service personnel. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire, employing purposive sampling and snowball sampling to collect data. The questionnaire consisted of four main sections: (1) demographic characteristics, (2) job characteristics, (3) emotional labor scale, and (4) musculoskeletal discomfort survey. The study sample consisted of funeral service personnel from the central and northern regions of the country, with a total of 200 questionnaires distributed and 186 valid responses received, resulting in a response rate of 93.5%. Descriptive statistics, stepwise regression analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used to examine the correlation between job characteristics, emotional labor, and musculoskeletal discomfort. Results: A total of 186 participants (101 males and 85 females) with a mean age of 35.33 ± 10.442 years were included in the study. Regression analysis was performed to examine the correlation between job characteristics and emotional labor, as well as musculoskeletal discomfort. The results showed that "coordinating funeral service items and work arrangements" (β = 0.155, p < 0.05) and "assisting families in collecting bones and sealing urns at the crematorium" (β = 0.210, p < 0.05) had a significant positive correlation with emotional labor. "Handling the transportation and placement of deceased bodies from start to finish" (β = -0.290, p < 0.01) had a significant negative correlation with emotional labor. "Escorting coffins to cemeteries or crematoriums" (β = -0.142, p < 0.01) showed a significant positive correlation with musculoskeletal discomfort. Conclusion: This study revealed that funeral service personnel experience high levels of emotional labor and commonly face musculoskeletal discomfort. Therefore, the emotional labor and occupational hazards associated with musculoskeletal discomfort among funeral service personnel should be given more attention and importance. The findings of this study can serve as a reference for future research and provide insights for relevant stakeholders. |
