Due to the development of science and technology, large amounts of information can be rapidly expanded and disseminated through the Internet and social media. Furthermore, the lack of a gatekeeper mechanism leads to the phenomenon of fake news becoming more and more serious. Fake news has caused many harms, so fake news has become an important issue of common concern worldwide. This study employed the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) to investigate factors that affect people's judgment on the authenticity of news. ELM is a persuasive model that describes information processing and attitude changes. According to the news type (political and life news) and platform type (social media and news sites), we designed four questionnaires. Based on the literature, the factors investigated included the argument quality and relevance (the central route), as well as image, source credibility and homogeneity (the peripheral route). The results of this study show that the argument quality has an impact on the evaluation of news authenticity in both political news or life news groups. The source credibility is influential on the evaluation of news authenticity in the political news group but not in the life news group. Relevance is influential in the life news group but not in the political news group.
