Abstract: In this study, I investigate the impacts of Facebook usage upon the interpersonal relationship, expressing emotion, showing self, enhancing knowledge, and academic achievement of undergraduate students in Taichung City. The study was conducted through the questionnaire-survey method. The collected data underwent descriptive statistics, chi-squared test, paired-samples T-test via the SPSS. I have the following conclusions:
The motivation of Facebook usage according to expressing emotion and showing self are different significantly among students of different genders and grades. There are not significant difference in motivation of interpersonal relationship and enhancing knowledge in the different genders. In different grades, the motivation of interpersonal relationship and enhancing knowledge are significant difference.
There are not significant differences in the different grades of undergraduate students concerning academic achievement between Facebook usage frequency in a week and each time of use. The usage frequency in a week and each time of use are significant difference in the first, second and fourth years of undergraduate students. For the first year undergraduate students, the more the usage frequency in a week is, the shorter the each time of use will be. For the second and fourth years undergraduate students, the more the usage frequency in a week is, the longer the each time of use will be.
The average time of Facebook usage of male student is shorter than that of female student. The average time of Facebook usage of female student is more the four hours. For male students, the academic achievement has significantly relationship upon the frequency of Facebook usage and each time of use. In contrast to female student, there are significant relationships between academic achievement and frequency of Facebook usage, but there are significantly relationship between the academic achievement and each time of use.
