This study aimed at constructiing and developing the Taiwanese Indigenous Sadness Scale. Based on the literature review, the researcher first developed and examed the reliability and validity of a five-factor model with 32 items: resentment at social injustice, suffering alone, miserable fate, low socioeconomic status, and being disparaged. The pilot study included 108 college student participants. Exploratory factor analysis was performed with principal factor Analysis and direct oblimin, Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.90. The total variance explained for was 60.08%. After excluding not applicable items, and reducing two factors, the results supported a 3-factor model with 16 items: (1) miserable fate; (2) suffering alone; (3) resentment at social injustice. The sample was 438 adults in Taiwan for the purposes of this study. The data were analyzed by Cronbach’s α, Criterion-Related Validity, and Exploratory Factor Analysis. The result of this study revealed that the Sadness Scale and subscales provide good quality of internal reliability and criterion-related validity, these three subscales’ Cronbach’s α was 0.87、0.91 and 0.90, and Sadness Scale Cronbach’s α was 0.93. Subscales and each validity criterions were analyzed by Pearson product-moment correlation. All the latent factors of the Sadness Scale have good construct validity. In conclusion, suggestions for effective applications of the Sadness Scale were proposed for counseling and further research.
