Abstract: | The damages that the human race is causing to the natural environment as well as the ecological problems have resulted us re-examine the importance of sustainable development of the natural ecological environment, which is why the primary topic of this study is the interactive relationship between nature and the human race.
In this study, the concept of symbiotic design is proposed as a method for us to rethink the balance between nature and the human race. Symbiotic products are designed to serve as a medium for strengthening environmental awareness. Our perceptions as well as our various senses interact with these products, allowing us to further understand the symbiotic relationship between the natural environment and us. These designs aim to “inspire people and affect the natural environment through the symbiotic ecological environment model.”
This study is divided into three portions. In the first portion of this study, we look into green design, emotional design, as well as the symbiotic model between humans and the natural environment. Through the discussion of the concept of ecological symbiosis, we develop a framework for understanding it and further establish the model. It can be found from existing literature that although green design does consider environmental-protection principles of the product life cycle, it is relatively lacking in term of emotional factors. This is why emotional design techniques allow symbiotic ecological environment concepts to be realistically conveyed as a reference during future product design efforts. In the second portion of this study, symbiotic design case studies will be discussed in order to establish a method for symbiotic design. This model is then applied to actual existing design cases in order to see whether or not people’s feelings and emotions toward the natural environment are triggered through their interaction with symbiotic products. In the third portion of this study, it is shown through the aforementioned methods that green design methods can be used as part of the process for performing symbiotic design in order to ensure that the product remains environmentally friendly throughout its entire product life cycle, thereby solidifying the physical-level foundation of symbiotic design. The three levels of emotional design are then used to enhance users’ emotional interaction with the product, establishing habits and emotions, as well as further triggering environmental-protection awareness. In this study, three symbiotic products are designed based on user lifestyle, which aim to strengthen the connection between humans and the natural environment. Finally, the three portions of this study are integrated to serve as a reference case for future product design efforts. |
