Some common use medications in the diabetes outpatient clinic possess extra benefits beyond their primitive indications. Using the samples from National Health Research Institutes (NHRI) in Taiwan, we found that newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients greater than age of 30 who received acarbose alone or in combination with other anti- diabetic regimen increased the risk of cardiovascular disease in the initial 12 months. After 12 months, the risk of cardiovascular disease became lower significantly. Similar result were also observed when analysis by models of cumulative dosage. In the second part, we found that regular use of aspirin within mean daily dosage of 40 mg in type 2 diabetes patients whose age more greater than 50 years led to significantly lower incidence of Alzheimer dementia, but not non-Alzheimer dementia. But when the mean daily dosage is above 80 mg, the risk will increase both in Alzheimer dementia and non-Alzheimer dementia. Although the exact mechanisms require further investigate, our findings provide significant insights to future clinical study.
