Abstract: The aim of this study is to find out how the training of walking impacts health-related fitness of students with mental retardation at junior high school. The target group is the class of 18 students with moderate or mild mental retardation at Fongshan Junior High School in Kaohsiung County. 9 of them were assigned to be the experimental group and 9 of the rest were collected to be the control group. For 3 times a week and 10 successive weeks, the students of the experimental group had to walk from 100 to 150 steps per minute for 30 continuous minutes each time. This training was expected to make students? heart beat for 130 times per minute (the highest pulse rate could reach 55% ? 70%). The students of the control group did not do any exercise during the same period of time. The results of physical fitness examination were collected both before and after the training of walking and then analyzed with SPSS. The level of significance ? has reached point 5. Below are the analyses.
I.After the experimental group finished the 10-week training of walking, from the results collected before and after the training, it can be seen that 4 aspects of physical fitness, namely, body composition, muscular endurance, (muscle) power , cardiorespiratory endurance have reached the level of significance, except flexibility . The control group did not do any training or exercise and the results of its physical fitness examination collected before and after the 10-week training have not reached the level of significance except body composition.
II.The results of physical fitness post-examination of the experimental group and control group have not reached the level of significance. However, it should be pointed out that the figures of the physical fitness of the experimental group were higher than the ones of the control group. It can be asserted that the 10-week training of walking can improve physical fitness of the experimental group although the results of both groups have not reached the level of significance.
The findings of this study appear that, to a certain degree, the 10-week training of walking may impact the students with mental retardation at junior high school on their body composition, muscular endurance, (muscle) power and cardiorespiratory endurance .
