Abstract: | Diabetes is caused by the inadequate secretion or malfunctioning of insulin in the patient?s body, which reduces the utilization of carbohydrate even to the extent of complete inability to use it, which then causes high reading of blood sugar as well as sugar in the urine, at the same time causing the metabolism of protein and fat to be abnormal. Medical nutrition therapy is an essential part of the diabetes care and administration program. Although it is most challenging to follow the Diabetes Mellitus diet, it is without doubt that Medical nutrition therapy is indispensable in successfully controlling diabetes.
In traditional Chinese medicine, diabetes was called ?the disease of acute thirst? or ?the three excessive disease? (i.e. excessive eating, excessive drinking, and excessive urinating). Patients of the acute thirst disease often feel dry and thirsty, which cannot be helped by continuous drinking. This phenomenon is caused by the inadequate 'yin' (or negative) element in our body, which refers to the deficiency in fluid and blood in the body. Inappropriate diet is the main cause for the inadequacy of 'yin'. Eating too much fat, calorie and carbohydrate often causes the accumulation of poisonous heat, damages the internal organs, and if the heat congregates do not disperse over a long time, the fluid and saliva will be drained. When the body is hot and restless, it becomes weak by excessive stress and loading. Ultimately, this will affect the endocrine system and confuse metabolism processes of human body. The function of insulin becomes abnormal or inadequate, blood sugar becomes excessive and flow into the urine, causing thephenomenon of elevated blood sugar.
It?s importantly, this study for Diabetes Mellitus both combines the traditional Chinese medical treatment and the Western nutritional theory. In this study, we construct a query interface based on several knowledge banks in the form of a Medical nutrition therapy of expert management system which incorporates databases from both Chinese and Western medical practice and especially designed for the patients of the acute thirst disease. Through the clearly defined and hierarchically categorized system, and an integrated unique query interface, the patient can quickly obtain useful diets provided by the system. In conclusion, the query system offers a great of advantages in Diabetes study or practical healthcare. |
