Being an expatriate worker with all heart: Exploring the expatriation motives to the mainland China, career path and post-expatriation adjustment of self-initiated expatriates The associations between employees’ international experiences, psychological needs and perceived career value of expatriation to the mainland China Abstract The aim of this research is to explore the relations between employees’ personal characteristics, international experiences, psychological needs and perceived career value of expatriation to the mainland China. We intend to use data from the 2010 Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS), and select full-time employees as our samples to examine the above proposed relationships. In recent years, more and more Taiwan workers voluntarily accept expatriate assignments. They not only see working in China as a career stepping stone, but also a career commitment. How do the general Taiwanese workforces now perceive the career value of expatriation to the mainland China? In order to answer this question, we focus on personal factors such as demographic characteristics, international experiences, and psychological needs (existence needs, relationship needs, growth needs) as correlates of the perceived career value of expatriation to the mainland China. Exploring the expatriation motives to the mainland China, career path and post-expatriation adjustment of self-initiated expatriates Abstract The second-year research aims to explore self-initiated expatriates’ motives to work in the mainland China, their career approach and post-expatriation adjustment process. As mentioned above, more and more Taiwanese workers voluntarily accept and/or apply for expatriation assignments. This type of self-initiated expatriates is very different from the traditional expatriates. In response to the scarcity of empirical research, especially non-Western studies, we propose a qualitative research to delineate the process from deciding to apply for a foreign assignment to adjusting to the mainland Chinese environments. Self-initiated Taiwanese expatriates will be enquired about their family background, motives, career paths for the present and future, pre-destination and pro-destination organizational supports, and work and life adjustment. Building on findings and enlightenments of this year, we can plan a series of quantitative research in the future. |
