Taiwanese Women's Body Discourse and Narrative Epic of Space: The Overpass of Pleasure from Female Ghosts to Witches This project aims to study the recent two novels of Li Ang’s—The Visible Ghosts (2004) and Tabernacular (2011), which provide females’images in early Taiwanese hybrid society presented in the literary works. Comparatively, the descriptive objects are different than what Li’s has done before and this is the most interesting part to study these two works as well. In The Visible Ghosts, the characters are the female ghosts from five different directions —the East, the North, the Center, the South and theWest, who narrate their own stories and further are portrayed as an allegory of a Ghost Kingdom. At the end of the stories, the five ghosts transgress the secular canons by surpassing the boundaries of their own bodies. Similarly, Li’s newest novel, Tabernacular, acquired local materials combined with the research of early Taiwanese social, cultural customs and local folklores, such as Hung- I is the witch of Siraya tribe and the narrator’s mother is Hung-I’s interpreter. The purpose of writing Tabernacular is to build up a utopian society of matriarchy which conducted the women’s extreme mission is to construct an epic of others. Furthermore, the issue of spiritual experience is sublimated into the level of eastern philosophy. Therefore, this project attempts to build up an integrated discourse by combining interdisciplinary themes: gender studies, space theories and topography, body discourse. In which, this project will establish the references of gender studies and historical reconstruction of others under the view of Taiwan and compile the matriarchal genealogy in these two novels.
