Abstract: Cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases rank the 2nd and 3rd of top 10 causes of death in Taiwan. Atherosclerosis is the main reason to procure such cardiovascular disease. Atherosclerosis induce by high blood fats level of cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL) in blood. The high blood fats level makes blood vessel endothelium damaged because these lipid is over-oxidization to produce large number of free radical. Foamy cell and endothelium proliferation formation induce the early lesion of atherosclerosis. The purpose of this study is to confer the effect of adjusting hyperlipidemia by perilla oil and nattokinase by using hyperlipidemia animal model. Experiments were conducte with the following four different treatments 1. blank control group; 2. high cholesterol control group; 3. high cholesterol control and perilla oil fed group; 4. high cholesterol control and nattokinase fed group. The experiments were carried out for 16 weeks. Results show that the perilla oil and nattokinase treatments both can reduce plasma cholesterol, LDL and Triglycerides (TG) level. The increase level of plasma cholesterol, LDL and TG of high cholesterol control compare to the blank control were 384%, 656% and 167%, respectively. All treatment groups show significantly increase of these biomarkers compared to the blank control(p <0.05). The hyperlipidemia response was showed on 4th week and the reduced ratio of plasma cholesterol, LDL and TG of perilla oil treatment were 62%, 60% and 52%; and those for nattokinase treatment were 26%, 10% and 33% respectively, compared to high cholesterol control. Such plasma lipid increase on high cholesterol control is 428%, 521% and 54%, respectively on 16th week compared to blank control. The plasma lipid level (cholesterol, LDL and TG) reduced on perilla oil treatment were 125%, 58% and 137% respectively; and those for nattokinase treatment were 44, 3 and 28 %, respectively. Results of abdominal aorta tissue sections shown that lipid collecting area were noticeable increased on positive control (2.1%) in comparing with blank control (0.5%). They were all noticeable reduce on perilla oil treatment 0.2% and nattokinase treatment 1.2% comparing with positive control. Observation of liver tissue sections, it also shown the percentage of liver lipid collecting area were noticeable reduced in perilla oil and nattokinase treatments compared to the positive control. These results showed that both perilla oil and nattokinase can reduce blood fats and hyperlipidemia, and perilla oil had shown better effects.
