Abstract: | The purposes of this research are as following. First, explore official and unofficial support networks of disadvantaged women. Second, understand the process of the official system that frustrated disadvantaged women and the factors which hinder the women when they seek help. Third, the feelings of disadvantaged women received services from the Woman Welfare Service Center. Fourth, difference of the services the disadvantaged women obtain between the Woman Welfare Service Center and other welfare organizations.
This research used the qualitative method. Six disadvantaged women were interviewed who had received services from Woman Welfare Service Center and other woman organization. The result of help seeking is presented by time frame graph and writing narration. The research conclusion includes the factors affecting the disadvantaged women seeking help, official and the unofficial support networks, the frustration and the feelings of the disadvantaged women when they seek help from the official system, and difference of service among organizations.
The study discovered that when disadvantaged women came across crisis, they would seek help from unofficial system first. When unofficial system can not help them, they will then seek help from the official system to solve problems. Besides the women personal motivation, women will be influenced by environmental factors. For example, whether they know the social welfare resources, criterion limitation of obtaining resources, the transfer among organizations, service provider's attitudes and so on, all these can affect the disadvantaged woman help seeking process.
Finally, the researcher proposed some suggestions regarding the social policy and the social worker practices. Hopefully, the research results can improve the conditions which hinder disadvantaged women seeking help and may help women to obtain assistance as soon as possible and to have ability to solve problems |
