摘要: Taboos are prevailing in every human community around the world, but taboo words are normally disallowed in public. Taboos could be presented in non-taboo forms. This paper aims to find out how people use languages to express out the physiological taboos, namely, sex, urination, excrement, etc. In general, mentioning body-parts taboos, people tend to adopt indirect expressions, i.e. medical terms, vague words, metaphors, onomatopoetic words, etc. In our opinions, it is plausible to regard these expressions as euphemisms in that they are mainly used for avoiding taboos. Delving into the metaphors used to represent body-parts taboos, we find them to be basically built upon three main features of the targets-shape, position and function and many of them are largely organized around three conceptual metaphors: SEXUAL ORGANS ARE ARMS, SEXUAL ORGANS ARE FOOD and SEX IS WORK. In the end, this paper goes into a comparison of Mandarin and English. It is found that the two languages are in perfect correspondence in most types of the metaphors used but Mandarin seems to be more conservative in this regard.
