    Abstract: Since 1985 the first cell phone comes out, it’s a necessary to everyone. According NCC’s data, each 100 people, have 124 cell phone numbers in Taiwan, its convenient and important to the modern people for the cell phone. (NCC, 2012.1.31) And the cell phone is trend to be image-based, and text be supplemented. It is easy for young people to adapt the new image or distinguish the text, but it’s difficult for middle-aged people to do. By age growth, a variety of functions will gradually degraded by the most obvious visual degradation. So the study is to distinguish the cell phone functional icon recognize form between 45 to 65 years old middle-aged people.By Questionnaire, to analyze how to distinguish and use cell phone functional. First, we summarized the results and afforded the guidance of icon design to the manufactures of cell phone. Second, from the classification table we found that the icon mostly made of “abstract sign”; especially the “pictorial sign” is the most.By the results, we discovered it is easy to distinguish the cell phone functional icon to for many middle-aged people, the reasons are: 1) Icons are “traditional” and “pictorial sign”. 2) Front view. 3) Specific image. 4) Icon has clear and simple lines. 5) And in the “Camera’s icon”, we can ting the complete icon is easier than only on port of the icon.On the contrary, it’s not easy to distinguish, there are four features. 1) The icons are “abstract sign” and “not common”. 2) The icons are contrasts are too bright and dim. 3) The icons are over omitted. 4) Three-dimensional icons. 5) The company –specific icon.Finally, for middle-aged people, icons are designed to avoid spending too much time to think icon meanings any dusting us avoid need to think. Should not be too omitted and should reach the equilibrium point is preferred.
