Background and Objectives: Past studies have confirmed that complementary therapy can improve the negative emotions of the elderly. However, with the development of technology, technology can bring more contributions. Existing research on introducing virtual reality into long-term care institutions mostly focuses on postural balance and cognitive training. However, for such residents, more attention should be paid to issues of emotion and stress. This study will explore the emotional impact of virtual reality on institutional residents through two virtual reality scenarios including nature and architecture.Research Method: This study adopts a quasi-experimental design method, using self-made virtual reality videos as an intervention measure, targeting residents of three institutions in central China. All participants were randomly assigned to two groups of different situations (natural and built environments) through simple random allocation. During the two-week intervention during the COVID-19 period, a total of 121 participants finally completed the case. Statistical Analysis Through descriptive statistics, paired sample t-test, independent sample t-test, univariate analysis of variance and covariate analysis, the influence of positive emotions, negative emotions, depression, anxiety and stress measured by the DASS-21 and PANAS scales in the two groups was explored.Research Results: In both the experimental and control groups, females are predominant (61.1% and 63.3%, respectively), with average ages of 65.88 years and 60.76 years, respectively. On a psychological level, the experimental group shows significant effects in positive emotions (T=-2.53, P<0.05), depression (T=4.85, P<0.05), and stress (T=5.39, P<0.05) compared to the control group. Therefore, this study suggests that natural landscapes significantly impact the emotions of care facility residents, and compared to architectural landscapes, natural environments have a greater influence on their emotions, especially in terms of positive feelings. Conclusion: According to research, virtual natural reality has a more obvious effect on improving the positive emotions of institutional residents. Therefore, this study believes that virtual reality is beneficial to mood improvement and should be included as one of the options for long-term care institutions in planning activity courses.
