Tourism can contribute to an increase in positive emotions and overall happiness levels, while also mitigating feelings of melancholy. However, for residents living in long-term care facilities, it can be challenging to go on trips. The purpose of this study is to incorporate virtual reality into long-term care institutions, examining the process and impact of elderly residents experiencing virtual reality travel from the perspectives of presence and flow theory. Residents from four long-term care facilities were recruited for participation, where they were provided with virtual reality experiences of watching travel videos and complete a questionnaire. The survey included sections covering demographic information, presence, Flow, happiness, and depression. A total of 125 individuals were recruited for this study, with an average institutional stay duration of 1.8 years. The results of the research demonstrate that residents who engaged in virtual reality travel experiences did experience a sense of presence and were directed towards a state of flow. The higher the sense of presence, the better the state of flow. Achieving a state of flow significantly influences the difference in feelings of happiness and depression. Indicating that virtual reality travel can also improve the psychological well-being of residents. Virtual reality offers a means to break away from conventional caregiving approaches, enabling residents to embark on richer and more diverse travel experiences, and to feel the joy and happiness that travel brings. The verification of virtual reality as a viable means to enhance the mental health of residents in long-term care facilities carries practical significance and offers valuable insights for practical implementation.
