Objective: Previous studies have demonstrated that the overuse of online sexual activity (OSA) might cause different negative consequences in individuals’ life. It was worth studying the psychological path within OSA. Although studies indicated that anxious attachment was associated with OSA, the effect size remained low. We believed that there were a mediator and moderator among them. From the past literature reviewed, OSA expectancies and sexual arousal of OSA might play an essential role in the association of anxious attachment with the frequency of OSA; maladaptive coping might also interact with OSA expectancies or sexual arousal of OSA to affect the frequency of OSA engagement. Therefore, we hypothesized that OSA expectancies and sexual arousal of OSA would serially mediate the association of anxious attachment with the frequency of OSA. Moreover, the sexual arousal of OSA would mediate the path from OSA expectancies to the frequency of OSA within the model. Furthermore, maladaptive coping would separately moderate the relationship between OSA expectancies and the frequency of OSA, and the relationship between sexual arousal of OSA and the frequency of OSA in two different models. Methods: The present study used stratified and cluster sampling to sample participants in two universities of Taichung. Participants who had experience with a romantic relationship were recruited. In total, 427 first-year university students completed the self-report paper-pencil questionnaires. The questionnaires included demographic information, online sexual activity scale, short-form of the Experiences in Close Relationship Scale (ECR-S), Brief COPE, the expectation sub-scale of Sex and the Internet, and the emotional arousal sub-scale of Sex and the Internet. SPSS and SmartPLS were used for examining the two structure models. Results: Results indicated that OSA expectancies and sexual arousal of OSA significantly mediated the association of anxious attachment with the frequency of OSA in the independent and serial paths. Moreover, maladaptive coping exhibited a significant and positive moderating effect on the prediction of OSA expectancies to the frequency of OSA and the prediction of sexual arousal of OSA to the frequency of OSA, especially in the high maladaptive coping group. Conclusions: The current data support our hypotheses; it provided the explanatory roles of OSA expectancies, sexual arousal of OSA, maladaptive coping in individuals with anxious attachment. The results verified these possible antecedent factors on OSA use. However, this is a cross-sectional study. In the future, a longitudinal study is needed. The present results also provided the interventional implications for a therapist in formulating the future therapy plan.
