Fairy tales are a crucial starting point for children to understand the world. Fairy tales are told to children in both the West and the Sinophone world during their childhood. But is there a correlation between the animals in fairy tales and the use of the language derived from the meaning ascribed to these animals? It’s possible that adults who narrate these stories are simply repeating what older generations told them when they were children and passed down verbatim without realizing the significance of the animals in the tales. This study focuses on the effect of fairy tales on animal expressions. In order to demonstrate that the metaphorical meanings of animal expressions may have originated in fairy tales, this thesis will examine the texts of stories containing animals, determine the animals’ characters in the stories, and then compare them with the semantic meanings of figurative animal expressions in everyday language to determine if the figurative meanings of animal expressions correspond to the animals’ characters in the stories. In conclusion, it was discovered that the characteristics of the animal characters in the stories corresponded well with the figurative meanings of the animal expressions. Moreover, by comparing Sinophone and Western cultures, we discover that if different cultures assign different roles and characteristics to the same animal, the animal expressions will have distinct figurative meanings. This further explains the impact of fairy tales on the figurative meanings of animal expressions.
