The researcher has served as volunteers for Taichung Welfare Promotion Association for the Disabled for more than 10 years. She has noticed the sports needs of the members as well as most of the members of the polio participate in the swimming team activities handled by the association. Therefore, it stimulated the interest in the subject of this study. The main literature is based on studies of the Convention on the Physically-impaired, and Polio Leisure Activities.
Research purposes:
1. Describe the experiences of participating in leisure activities in the life course of polio.
2. Discuss the main factors of swimming as a leisure activity for polio patients and the reasons for continuing to use swimming as a leisure activity.
3. Explore in depth how swimming can enhance their self-concept and social participation of polio
Research Methods:
In this study, qualitative interviews were conducted for four poliomyelitis participants participating in the swimming team.
Research findings:
1. For polio, the chances of leisure activities are excluded when they are young.
2. Polio persons join the swimming team because of their leisure needs. Swimming is not only an effective way to rehabilitate and exercise, but also promotes their active participation in social activities and the expansion of interpersonal relationships.
3. Respondents hope that the government can pay attention to the barrier-free facilities in swimming equipment and give preferential treatment or subsidies to the cost of swimming.
Conclusion:
Caring for people with disabilities is a way to demonstrate human rights protection. For the purposes of this study, the involvement of polio in swimming teams has multiple positive implications. Swimming has promoted the physical and mental health of individuals and developed personal social skills. How to make more poliomyelitis in Taiwan participate more actively in swimming and leisure activities is our common goal and the direction of our efforts.
