This study provided a technical report that tackled the problem of Taiwan becoming an aging society. A literature review revealed that in 2026, Taiwan will become a hyper-aged society. Numerous studies have stated that aging causes the deterioration of physiological function, development of chronic diseases and psychological and emotional disturbances, deterioration of cognitive function, and increase in medical expenditure. This study investigated the different perceptions of promoters and participants of pickleball. The research participants were four pickleball promotors and six older-adult pickleball players. Using on-site observations, semistructured interviews, and focus group interviews, this study organized and analyzed the collected data and discovered that currently, promoters mainly promote this sport in communities. However, because of the lack of suitable sites in communities for playing pickleball and information about the sport, promoters should promote this activity in colleges and universities.
Pickleball is a ball game that is beginner-friendly and of low intensity. Older adults can still play it when they are no longer physically able to play other sports. It is also beneficial to physical and psychological health. Therefore, playing pickleball enhances parent–child relationships and reduces the care burden of the government and the family. In addition, sports equipment for pickleball costs less than that for other ball games. Pickleball is highly entertaining and increases players’ social skills. To date, older adult players mostly participate in the 2.0 or 3.0 rating groups in tournaments. We hope that pickleball will become a game for all age groups in the future.
