Abstract: Objective:With the rapidly aging population and diversifying diseases, we need early intervention and prevention in pursuing health. The antioxidants can protect body from the oxidative damage caused by free radicals and delaying the process of some chronic diseases. Therefore, this study explores the effect of Pu'er tea on antioxidant mechanism and its effectiveness by systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
Method:This study surfed six updated databases(until March 2017), Pubmed, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, Airiti library and China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database with key words as following: Pu'er tea, antioxidant, puerh、pu_erh、pu erh、pu'er、antioxidant、free radical. The effects of Pu'er tea on antioxidant activity were reviewed. In addition, the multiple variables in the literature were calculated by Review Manager 5.3. The mean value (Mean) and standard deviation (SD) were used to evaluate the antioxidant properties before and after Pu'er tea intervention.
Results:We included 13 systemic reviews (4 in English, 9 in Chinese), with animal experiments mainly. Of these, data from 9 randomized trials were collected for meta-analysis. The results confirmed Pu'er tea can significantly reduce the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) and increase antioxidants activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX).
Conclusion:Pu'er tea, as antioxidants, has significant effect on health.
