In recent years, people gradually focus on auditory, tactile, taste and smell sensation and so on. Selling products on-line is in vogue nowaday. E-books are easy to read without limitation of time and space but e-books only stimulate visual sensation without tactile sensation; brick-and-mortar bookshops provide people visual and tactile experience. The purpose of this study was to explore visual and tactile sensation of different materials of book covers and also to explore the interrelationship and differences of perception to the book-cover materials.
In this study, " SDT, semantic differential technique " and "questionnaire survey" are used to evalueate Image of book-cover materials. Image of book-cover materials is acquired in two modes; They are visual mode and visual–tactile mode. The visual mode is also called screen mode. And the visual–tactile mode is also called entity mode. SDT is used to analyze data; questionnaire survey is used as the research tool. After complete satistics collected,it’s tested to reveal whether there is marked differences or not between visual mode and visual–tactile mode. Finally, "multivariate analysis" is used to analyze data to find not only common factors from most variables, but also the major factors that affect image to book covers. The overall feeling of the book cover is affected by the texts, authors, colors, binding form, content, and materials. Book cover is the book's appearance, but also give readers first impressions and feelings. This study set the book covers in same design, but different paper material as experimental variables.
The main results are summarized as follows:
    1. The results showed there were marked differences in more than seven groups of adjective after fourteen groups of adjective was tested. Tong snow ivory paper , Lainie paper , the United States track Yalow , green paper shell beauty , He Lanka , Japan native feel of paper, chanson , fashion style paper , and DiamondMax moonlight, the above-mentioned nine samples showed different sensation between visual mode and visual-tactile mode. In the nine samples, the visual sensation can not take place of tactile sensation.
    2. Factors that affect Image of subjects in the result are "Contemporary factor" and "material factor." Conclusions of this study: Nine samples of the fifteen show different sensation between visual mode and visual-tactile mode. It shows that the visual sensation can not take place of tactile sensation.
